Activity programmes in Feldkirch

Symbols of resistance and cultural fusion

Feldkirch Herbst 2014

Feldkirch boasts one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Western Austria, with its cityscape dominated by Schattenburg Castle. The city’s undeniable character is tangible – a fusion of history, innovation, and everyday life. Emblematic of this is its Montforthaus, a striking modern statement in a medieval setting. Without a doubt, Feldkirch is an exciting place for a diverse activity programme.

Cultural destinations

After long days of seminars, arriving in the city is simply fascinating: striking squares, narrow streets, and historic archways. To ensure the group doesn't get lost while exploring the winding paths, how about a nightwatchman or coachman for company? Indeed, Feldkirch offers a variety of themed and adventure tours. For a journey back in time without a local guide, look no further than the Schattenburg, emblem of the city and home to a spectacular armory.

There’s plenty of culture on show as well at Palais Liechtenstein , right opposite the city’s emblematic Katzenturm , erected back in 1507 as a defence tower for the city walls. The facade of Palais Liechtenstein tells its own story, bearing the coat of arms of the Prince of Liechtenstein. On the second floor, a rotating temporary art exhibition awaits.

A short drive from Feldkirch offers the chance to visit a unique exhibition in the region: the Vorarlberg Museum World in Frastanz. How often does one get the opportunity to visit six museums under one roof?

Excursions into nature

Feldkirch also has its fair share of nature. One of its local mountains is the Stadtschrofen, which offers the best views of the city. Active groups can hike from Reichenfeld past the Letztehof Buddhist Monastery to the Stadtschrofen and from there back to the city through the Ill Gorge. The easy hike takes about 1.2 hours, covers 3.7 kilometers and an elevation gain of 180 meters. For more of a challenge, consider a tour of Feldkirch's local mountains across around 23 km and an elevation gain of 440 metres – also possible by bike.

On the other end of the spectrum is an easy visit to Wildpark Feldkirch. In the stillness of the forest, good conversations can flow among wolves, lynxes, and wild boars. And right next to the parking lot is Ardetzenberg Water Castle, built in 1906 – a fantastic viewpoint overlooking the town.

Those who want to go even higher or deeper can take a trip to the mountain village of Laterns and explore the Üble Gorge with its steep cliff faces. Its name reaches back to a time when it was an insurmountable obstacle – thankfully no longer the case! In Laterns there’s also a marvellous summer tobogganing track.

Entertainment options

Memories are often made at concerts, performances, or festivals. That's why it's worth checking the event calendar of the Alten Hallenbad (former Indoor Swimming Pool), where annually from July to August poolbar Festival takes place. Maybe you’ll also get the chance to catch a performance at Theater am Saumarkt, with its diverse and intriguing programme.

Finally, the team can relax into the lounge sofas at the GUK cinema. A shared film night provides plentiful conversation topics, to be explored afterwards over dinner in the old town.
